Abstract

Steering or rudder is a system that serves to change the direction of movement of a ship. Ship steering system in the form of leaf / plate located on the back of the boat and use a hydraulic system to move the steering wheel right and left leaves, this study describes the working hydraulic system steering gears in steering the ship. Hydraulic system is a technology that utilizes liquid, usually oil, to perform a line of movement or rotation. The steering gear driving power source can be classified into 4 namely using hands for small vessels, steam movers found in ancient steam ships except for tankers equipped with auxiliary boilers, good use on tankers because of the low risk of fire and because of steam can be used as a fire extinguisher or used for oil tank cleaners. Problems with weakness are more complex / complicated in making installations and adjustments, high initial costs and reality require specificity in maintenance and placement in operations.
