Abstract

Steering gear is an auxiliary machine that functions to change and determine the direction of movement of the ship, both straight and turning the ship, to the left (port side) and to the right (starboard side), by moving the rudder (steering leaf). The research method used in this research is quantitative method. The data analysis technique uses the Urgency, Seriousness, and Growth (USG) method by determining the priority level of the issue using a number scale in order to obtain an effective and effective resolution of issues by maintaining the performance of the Steering Gear at KM.Clarissa is then carried out maintenance and repair as desired . Based on the results of research that has been conducted by researchers, the steering gear is not working optimally, caused by not operating properly on the value system, there are some bolts or pipe connections that are loose, the quality and type of hydraulic oil is not suitable for use, damage to the seal and o -ring. Decreased performance of hydraulic pumps, caused by leakage of pipe joints, damage to valves, decreased quality of hydraulic oil, dirty or clogged filters and leaks in hydraulic cylinders. To overcome these factors, it can be done routinely checking the electric-hydraulic steering gear, checking the pump, checking the pipes leading to the hydraulic pump, hydraulic pump valves, checking the quality of hydraulic oil. So that the safety and smoothness of the ship's maneuvering does not experience more severe component damage or damage, in this paper, there is a way to prevent damage to the Steering Gear in KM.
