Abstract
Welding is a metal joining method widely used in construction and manufacturing. The quality of a weld joint is influenced by various factors, one of which is the cooling medium used after the welding process. This study aims to determine the effect of water, oil, and air cooling media on the mechanical properties of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) joints on ASTM A36 steel through tensile and bending tests. The research method used was an experimental approach by evaluating Maximum Stress, Maximum Flexural Strength, and Elongation. The tensile test results showed that the water cooling medium produced the highest Maximum Stress value of 363.304 MPa with an Elongation of 46.883%, while the oil cooling medium produced the lowest values of 285.513 MPa and 27.805%, respectively. In the bending test, the water cooling medium resulted in the highest Maximum Flexural Strength of 652.108 MPa, whereas the highest Elongation value was obtained from the oil cooling medium at 49.448%. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the cooling medium significantly affects the mechanical properties of SMAW welded joints on ASTM A36 steel. The water cooling medium provided the best overall performance by producing the highest tensile strength and flexural strength compared to oil and air cooling media.
