Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) current on the mechanical properties of SS400 low-carbon steel used in buoy structure applications. The welding process was carried out using E7018 electrodes with current variations of 100 A and 110 A. Prior to mechanical testing, the quality of the welded joints was inspected using the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Dye Penetrant Test method to ensure that no surface defects were present that could affect the test results. The mechanical property evaluation included tensile testing based on ASTM E8/E8M and bending testing based on ASTM E290. The results indicate that variations in welding current significantly affect the mechanical properties of the welded joints. In the tensile test, specimens welded with a current of 110 A achieved an average tensile strength of 221.062 MPa, which was higher than that of specimens welded with 100 A, with an average tensile strength of 185.324 MPa, representing an increase of approximately 19.29%. In the bending test, specimens welded with 110 A produced an average bending strength of 475.720 MPa, while those welded with 100 A produced 439.482 MPa, indicating an increase of approximately 8.25%. The improvement in tensile and bending strength demonstrates that a higher welding current provides a more optimal heat input, resulting in better weld penetration, stronger bonding between the weld metal and the base metal, and improved mechanical performance of the welded joint. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that variations in SMAW welding current influence the mechanical properties of SS400 low-carbon steel. A welding current of 110 A provided the best results in terms of tensile and bending strength and is therefore recommended as the optimal welding parameter for buoy structure fabrication.
