Abstract
Navigation Navigation safety is a key factor in ensuring smooth maritime transportation therefore, the management of shipping channels supported by Aids to Navigation is essential. KN Prajapati, a navigation vessel owned by the Tanjung Intan Cilacap Navigation District (Type A, Class III), plays a vital role in supporting the operation, maintenance, supervision, and monitoring of AtoN to ensure the safety and efficiency of shipping channels in the Cilacap area. This paper aims to examine the role of KN Prajapati, the operational procedures for maintaining the channel, the challenges encountered, and the measures taken to address them. A descriptive method with a qualitative approach was employed. Data collection was conducted through observation, documentation, and literature review during the shore-based practical training at the Tanjung Intan Cilacap Navigation District. The findings indicate that KN Prajapati plays a role in the installation, maintenance, repair, supervision, and distribution of Aids to Navigation such as buoys, beacons, and lighthouses to ensure they remain functional according to navigation standards. These activities contribute to creating safe, orderly, and efficient shipping channels, thereby enhancing navigation safety. However, implementation faces several challenges, including unpredictable weather, the vessel's advanced age, the vast operational area, and damage to or loss of Aids to Navigation due to natural factors or human activity. Mitigation efforts include periodic vessel maintenance, improved inter-unit coordination, optimized patrols, and continuous care and monitoring of Aids to Navigation. Thus, KN Prajapati plays a crucial role in supporting the reliability of shipping channels and enhancing navigation safety within the operational area of the Tanjung Intan Cilacap Navigation District (Type A, Class III).
