Abstract

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding method that utilizes friction between a rotating tool and a stationary workpiece, so that the material becomes soft and connected without melting. Aluminum 5052 is widely used in structural applications because it is lightweight and corrosion resistant, but has poor weldability when joined with conventional fusion welding methods. This study aims to analyze the effect of FSW welding on the tensile strength, bending strength, and impact strength of 3 mm thick 5052 aluminum joints, using a tool rotational speed of 1515 rpm and a feed rate of 20 mm/minute. Tests were carried out referring to the ASTM E8 standard for tensile testing and ASTM E23 for impact testing, accompanied by testing of several welded specimens. The results showed an average tensile strength of 50.33 MPa, a maximum bending force of 137 N with a bending strength of 1.95 MPa, and varying impact strength values between specimens. Visual observations revealed defects along the weld path, such as voids, excessive flash, and uneven surfaces, which were the primary causes of the low and inconsistent mechanical strength of the joint. These results suggest that suboptimal material mixing during FSW results in defects that directly impact the mechanical performance of the resulting joint.
