Abstract
Maritime transportation is a fundamental pillar for connectivity in Indonesia, where the steering gear system is vital for navigation safety, as its failure can lead to serious accidents like collisions or groundings. This study aims to understand the working mechanism of the steering gear on KM. Mila Utama, evaluate its maintenance implementation to ensure operational reliability, and identify various technical and non-technical constraints. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, with data collection through direct observation at PT. Janata Marina Indah from August to November 2025, in-depth interviews with the crew, and literature studies of technical documents and maritime regulations. Results indicate that KM. Mila Utama utilizes a hydraulic steering system that implements a Planned Maintenance System (PMS) and complies with ISM Code and SOLAS 1974 regulations through daily maintenance, such as oil leak checks, and periodic maintenance, including filter replacement and mechanical component lubrication. In conclusion, although the current system and maintenance procedures effectively support navigational safety, significant obstacles remain, including limited maintenance time due to busy shipping schedules, component wear from age, limited stock of critical spare parts, and variations in crew competence. Therefore, optimizing maintenance management and enhancing human resource training programs are necessary to ensure the continuous reliability of the steering system and adherence to national and international seaworthiness standards.
