Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country with marine areas covering approximately 70% of its total territory, making maritime transportation the primary means of inter-island connectivity and a significant driver of the national economy. In the shipbuilding industry, ship docking and undocking operations widely utilize airbags due to their efficiency in terms of labor and operational costs. However, exposure to seawater, which is highly corrosive, can degrade the quality of airbag materials and increase the risk of operational failure. This study aims to analyze the effect of seawater exposure on the durability of airbag materials and its relationship with operational safety. The material used in this study was obtained from discarded airbags that were no longer utilized in shipyard operations. The research employed a quantitative method with a descriptive experimental approach. Specimens were immersed in seawater for 1, 2, and 3 weeks and subsequently subjected to tensile testing to determine their maximum tensile strength and elongation. The data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistical methods. The results showed that the maximum tensile strength decreased from 47.262 MPa in the unimmersed condition to 43.452 MPa after 1 week of immersion, 43.177 MPa after 2 weeks, and 32.065 MPa after 3 weeks. The greatest reduction occurred after 3 weeks of immersion, reaching 32.15% compared to the initial condition. These findings indicate that longer exposure to seawater leads to a greater decrease in the durability of airbag materials. This reduction may diminish the airbag's ability to withstand loads during ship docking and undocking operations, thereby increasing the risk of operational failure. Therefore, periodic inspection and maintenance are necessary to ensure airbag reliability and improve the operational safety of ship docking and undocking processes.
