Abstract

This research investigates the influence of bow modification on the resistance performance of Tugboat UVM 08, which has a length overall (LOA) of 27.65 meters, by incorporating a pusher tug structure at the bow section. The study is driven by the necessity to enhance the vessel’s hydrodynamic performance in order to minimize resistance and reduce power consumption, thereby improving the operational effectiveness of tugboats. The study employs a numerical simulation approach using Maxsurf Resistance software with the Holtrop empirical calculation method. Simulations were carried out under two configurations, namely the original hull form and the modified bow design, across a speed range of 1–12 knots. The simulation results show that the modified design causes an increase in frictional resistance due to the larger wetted surface area. However, the residuary resistance decreases because the modified bow geometry produces a more favorable flow pattern and reduces wave generation. As a result, the total resistance at operating speeds becomes lower than that of the original design. Furthermore, the effective power required for operation is also reduced, indicating improved hydrodynamic efficiency. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the application of a pusher tug modification on the bow is capable of enhancing both the hydrodynamic characteristics and operational efficiency of Tugboat UVM 08.
