Abstract
Heavy lift cargo handling is one of the high-risk operations in commercial shipping, particularly when the cargo weight exceeds the safe capacity of a single crane. Under such conditions, the tandem lifting method becomes a technical solution that allows heavy cargo to be lifted by operating two cranes simultaneously. This paper aims to describe the manual hatch cover opening process, analyze the implementation of the tandem lifting method in unloading cargo up to 150 tons using two cranes with a Safe Working Load (SWL) of 90 tons each on board MV Sol Shanghai, and explain the reasons for using a barge as the receiving platform for the cargo. The writing method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques consisting of direct observation, interviews, and documentation conducted during shore-based training at PT. Solid Pelayaran Indonesia. The collected data were analyzed based on field operational procedures and compared with applicable international safety standards, such as SOLAS, the ISM Code, IMO Guidelines, and ILO regulations. The results of the discussion indicate that the manual hatch cover opening process is carried out through several stages, including rigging preparation, sling installation, lifting the hatch cover using ship cranes, and safely placing the hatch cover onto a heavy lift. The application of the tandem lifting method on MV Sol Shanghai is necessary because the cargo weight reaches 117 to 150 tons, which exceeds the capacity of a single crane. Lifting operations using two cranes with an SWL of 90 tons can be safely performed through balanced load distribution, synchronized crane movements, the use of appropriate rigging gear, and effective coordination among personnel. Furthermore, the use of a barge as the cargo receiving platform has proven effective in overcoming berth load limitations and enhancing the safety of cargo handling operations. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the implementation of the tandem lifting method on MV Sol Shanghai has been carried out in accordance with operational procedures and occupational safety standards, thereby supporting the safe and efficient unloading of heavy lift cargo.
