Abstract

The cylinder head of the auxiliary engine is a crucial component on the ship's auxiliary engine that functions as a cover for the cylinder block and forms a sealed combustion chamber in a 4-stroke diesel auxiliary engine. The main task of the cylinder head is to house the fuel injector, intake-exhaust valves, cooling water jacket channels, and lubricants to ensure efficient combustion, precise valve timing, and optimal conversion of thermal energy into electrical power to support ship operations such as lighting, pumps, and navigation when the main engine is off. The role of the cylinder head is vital for the performance of the TB. Patin Laut auxiliary engine, as its structural integrity affects the compression ratio, fuel efficiency, and onboard system stability. However, several problems often occur on the cylinder head, one of which is overheating and extreme thermal expansion. The main causes of this phenomenon are insufficient cooling water, water jacket failure, or corrosion due to age degradation, so excess heat causes material distortion, cracking, and leakage between oil and coolant that reduces generator performance. This can cause damage to the cylinder head and related components such as pistons, liners, and injectors. Damages that often occur due to these conditions include damaged packing gaskets, bent valves, structural cracking, and reduced sealing that triggers increased fuel consumption, engine knocking, and the risk of total blackout that endangers ship safety. In addition, if not addressed, it can have fatal consequences for the secondary propulsion system, turbine, or exhaust manifold. To prevent such damage, maintenance of the auxiliary engine cylinder head is very important to be carried out preventively and through periodic overhauls. One of the main steps in maintenance is a systematic overhaul procedure such as draining coolant, removing manifolds, rocker arms, and injectors, followed by cleaning carbon deposits and measuring valve clearance using a feeler gauge. Optimal cooling with the water jacket and precise torque on the mounting bolts can maintain operating temperatures of 75-80°C and extend component life. In addition, periodic inspections using pressure testing, dye penetrant inspection for crack detection, and replacement of worn valve guides, seats, and springs are also very necessary. Cleaning lubricant channels and intake-exhaust can prevent dirt buildup that affects combustion efficiency. By performing preventive, periodic, and proper maintenance according to the manual book at PT. Gamantara Trans Ocean Shipyard, cylinder head damage can be avoided, optimizing auxiliary engine performance, and extending the overall engine life.
