Abstract
This research aims to investigate the effect of welding current variations in Flux Cored Arc Welding–Self Shielded (FCAW-SS) on the mechanical properties of low carbon steel AISI 1015, including tensile strength, impact toughness, and non-destructive test (NDT) evaluation. The welding currents used were 100 A, 120 A, and 140 A. Tensile testing was carried out according to ASTM E8, impact testing used the Charpy V-notch method following ASTM E23, and defect evaluation was performed using the penetrant test method. The tensile test results showed that the highest ultimate tensile strength was obtained at 120 A, reaching 285.95 MPa with an average of 268.40 MPa, while 100 A produced the lowest average tensile strength of 250.40 MPa. At 140 A, the tensile strength decreased slightly to an average of 270.04 MPa. These results indicate that 120 A provides the most optimal welding current in producing joints with higher tensile strength. The impact test results showed that the highest absorbed energy was obtained at 140 A, with an average impact energy of 131.67 J and an impact value of 1.72 J/mm². At 120 A, the average impact energy was 116.88 J with an impact value of 1.41 J/mm², while 100 A produced the lowest average impact energy of 87.24 J with an impact value of 1.13 J/mm². This indicates that higher welding currents tend to increase the toughness of the welded joints. The NDT results using the penetrant test showed no significant surface defects in the welded specimens, confirming that the welds were visually acceptable. In conclusion, the variation of welding current significantly affects the mechanical properties of low carbon steel AISI 1015. The optimum current for tensile strength was 120 A, while 140 A was superior in enhancing impact toughness.
