Abstract
The ballast pump is a vital service system on a ship that functions to regulate water distribution to maintain stability, especially during loading and unloading processes. However, in its operation, technical obstacles often occur as found on the KM. HAIDA, where a pump pressure drop from 4.5 kg f/cm² to 2 kg f/cm² occurred due to component damage. The main issue raised in this research is the optimization of mechanical seal and impeller maintenance to overcome operational disruptions and the risk of demurrage costs. The objective of this paper is to identify the causes of damage in detail and determine appropriate repair and maintenance procedures for ballast pumps at PT. Janata Marina Indah. The research methods used in solving this problem include primary data collection through direct observation during shore practice, interviews with experts such as the head of the engine department, and physical documentation during repairs. The author also used secondary data through literature studies from books and internal company reports. The research results show that damage to the ballast pump can be detected through pressure drop indicators, cavitation symptoms, excessive vibration, and leaks in the sealing system. These problems were resolved by implementing systematic maintenance methods, including routine cleaning, bearing lubrication, and replacement of worn or damaged impeller or mechanical seal components according to procedures. The final conclusion of this paper is that early detection through specific signs and the implementation of periodic maintenance based on the manual book are crucial to ensure operational reliability, extend pump service life, and maintain ship safety. Keywords: Ballast Pump, Impeller, Mechanical Seal, Maintenance.
