Abstract

The rocker arm is a crucial component in the valve mechanism of a diesel engine, functioning to transmit camshaft motion to accurately open and close the intake and exhaust valves. Suboptimal rocker arm performance can disrupt the combustion process, reduce engine power, increase fuel consumption, and cause further damage to main engine components. This paper aims to analyze the working system, maintenance methods, and causes of rocker arm malfunctions in the main diesel engine of the tugboat TB. PATIN LAUT, which is equipped with a Weichai CW6200ZC–39 engine. The data collection method involved both primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained through direct observation of rocker arm conditions and maintenance procedures, as well as interviews with engine officers, machinists, and supervisors at the shipyard. Secondary data were collected through a literature review, including main engine and auxiliary engine manuals, scientific journals, and other technical references, and were complemented by direct observations conducted during the Land Practice Program (PRADA) at PT. Gamatara Trans Ocean Shipyard, Cirebon. The results indicate that periodic inspection and maintenance of the rocker arm carried out every 1,000 operating hours in accordance with the manual book and the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) can prevent excessive wear, maintain valve clearance stability, and enhance valve mechanism performance. After maintenance and repair, the valve opening and closing mechanism operated optimally, the combustion process became more efficient, abnormal vibration and noise in the cylinder head were reduced, and the reliability and efficiency of the main engine improved. Proper and well-planned rocker arm maintenance plays a vital role in maximizing the performance and service life of a ship’s main engine. Keywords: Engine Maintenance, Main Engine, Rocker Arm, Valve Mechanism.
