Abstract
Hydraulic cranes are critical components of maritime infrastructure, serving a vital role in ensuring the efficiency of cargo handling and operational activities aboard ships. Operating under high-pressure parameters, the functional integrity of these systems depends heavily on systematic maintenance to prevent performance degradation. This scientific paper aims to identify the determinant factors causing performance decline in the hydraulic crane of the KM Kumba, formulate optimization strategies, and establish effective maintenance protocols. The methodology employed in this research is a descriptive-qualitative case study approach. Data collection was conducted through direct field observations at the KM Kumba, structured interviews with officers and crew members, and a comprehensive literature review. The investigation reveals that the primary cause of performance degradation is uncontrolled overpressure within the hydraulic circuit, empirically observed during Safe Working Load (SWL) testing. This phenomenon stems from the failure of the pressure relief valve to modulate surplus pressure, resulting in the structural breach of the valve plank and hydraulic piping. Furthermore, factors such as material fatigue due to component aging and the inefficiency of the oil cooling system significantly exacerbate system instability.Recommended optimization measures include periodic pressure system calibration and the disciplined implementation of a Planned Maintenance System (PMS). A primary focus is placed on monitoring wire rope running hours, which must be renewed after 5,000 hours of use or four years of service to prevent material failure due to brittleness or diameter shrinkage. Through planned and sustainable maintenance management, it is expected that the operational reliability and safety of the hydraulic crane can be maintained to support seamless maritime logistics.
