Abstract

The General Service Pump (GS Pump) is one of the essential pieces of equipment on board a ship, functioning to support various operational systems such as the cooling system, fire-fighting system, and other operational needs. The reliability of the pump is highly influenced by the condition of its components, especially the bearing, which serves to support shaft rotation and reduce friction during operation. Damage to the bearing can lead to decreased pump performance and potentially disrupt the overall ship operational system. Therefore, analyzing bearing damage in the pump is crucial to maintaining the reliability of the ship’s machinery system. The purpose of this study is to identify the causes of bearing damage in the General Service Pump on board KN. Prajapati, to determine the impact of bearing damage on pump performance and ship operations, and to identify appropriate maintenance efforts to prevent bearing failure. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including direct observation in the engine room, interviews with engine crew members, and documentation studies of pump maintenance records. The collected data were then analyzed to identify the factors causing damage and their impact on pump performance. The results show that bearing damage in the General Service Pump is indicated by increased vibration, rising temperature in the bearing housing, and the occurrence of abnormal noise during pump operation. The damage is caused by several factors, including inadequate lubrication, shaft misalignment, wear due to long-term use, and excessive mechanical vibration. In conclusion, the implementation of scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance is essential to maintain bearing condition and improve pump reliability. Routine inspections of lubrication, temperature, and vibration can help detect damage at an early stage, ensuring optimal pump performance and the safety of ship operations. Keywords: bearing, General Service Pump, pump failure, bearing maintenance.
