Abstract
The propeller is a vital component of a ship’s propulsion system, functioning to convert mechanical energy from the main engine into thrust. Propeller efficiency plays a decisive role in overall ship performance, particularly in terms of fuel consumption, speed, and operational efficiency. One common issue arises from pitch angle changes due to wear or suboptimal repairs, which can significantly reduce propulsion performance. This study aims to analyze the effect of repairing a 1800 mm pitch propeller on ship performance, focusing on sailing speed, fuel consumption, shaft vibration, and propulsion system efficiency. A quantitative approach was employed, with direct field measurements taken before and after the propeller repair. The repair process consisted of three main stages: rebalancing, polishing & grinding, and coating treatment. Data were analyzed using statistical tests (t-test and linear regression) to identify significant differences and relationships between variables. The results indicate that repairing the pitch propeller significantly improved ship speed at various RPM levels, reduced fuel consumption, and lowered shaft vibration. Operational efficiency also increased notably after the repair. These findings highlight that proper propeller maintenance plays a crucial role in optimizing ship performance while simultaneously reducing operational costs. This research is expected to serve as a technical reference for the maritime industry in propeller maintenance management and to contribute to the development of more efficient and sustainable ship management strategies.
