Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of bevel angle variations (30°, 40°, and 50°) and the use of ceramic backing on mechanical strength and weld defects in Grade A steel materials using the Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) method. Tests were conducted using visual macro test, dye penetrant test, impact test (Charpy), and tensile test. The results showed that the use of ceramic backing consistently improved welding quality, characterized by more complete penetration, fewer weld defects, and higher tensile and impact strength values at each bevel variation. A bevel angle of 50° with ceramic backing produced the highest joint strength and impact toughness and the least weld defects. These findings confirm the importance of the selection of bevel parameters and the use of ceramic backing to produce optimal Grade A steel welding joints in the SMAW process, the combination of the right bevel angle and the use of ceramic backing greatly affects the quality of Grade A steel welding results in the SMAW process. Keywords: Bevel Variation, Ceramic Backing, Mechanical Strength, Grade A Steel, Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).
