Abstract
Navigation is an important aspect in the world of shipping which aims to ensure that ships move safely and efficiently from one point to another.Basic knowledge of navigation is essential for all crew members, especially navigation officers, to avoid accidents at sea and comply with international safety standards. The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) stipulates various provisions related to navigation equipment, voyage planning, and operational procedures on board ships. In accordance with SOLAS, ships must be equipped with navigation aids such as nautical charts, radar, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). In addition, good voyage planning is mandatory, taking into account factors such as weather conditions, ocean currents, water depth, and the presence of navigation obstacles. Basic navigation knowledge includes the ability to read and interpret nautical charts, use navigation tools effectively, recognize sea markings and navigation signals, and skills in performing manual navigation if electronic aids fail. The application of these basic principles is essential in improving shipping safety, protecting the marine environment, and optimizing ship operational efficiency. SOLAS also regulates training and certification procedures to ensure that all navigation personnel have adequate competence. Thus, mastering basic navigation knowledge in accordance with SOLAS standards not only meets international legal requirements, but also becomes an integral part of the safety culture in the maritime industry. This knowledge supports the creation of safe, responsible and sustainable shipping operations worldwide. Keywords: navigation, SOLAS, maritime safety, voyage.
