Abstract
Echo sounder is a very important navigation tool in shipping operations, functioning to detect accurate sea depth so that the ship is always on a safe shipping lane. This study aims to analyze the role of echo sounder in the navigation safety of the KN. Bima Sakti Utama ship in the work area of the Tanjung Perak Surabaya Port Navigation District. The research methods used include field observation, interviews with ship operators, and analysis of water depth data obtained from the echo sounder. The results of the study indicate that the use of echo sounder on KN. Bima Sakti Utama contributes significantly to avoiding shallow areas, supporting hydrographic survey activities, and improving navigation safety around the port. However, there are several obstacles in its use, such as signal interference due to weather and wave conditions. Therefore, routine maintenance and increased operator competence are needed in operating this tool. In conclusion, echo sounder has a crucial role in the navigation safety of KN.
