Abstract
The piston is one of the main components in a ship's main engine, functioning to receive pressure from combustion and convert it into mechanical energy. Since it operates in extreme conditions with high temperatures and pressures, the piston requires regular maintenance and repairs to ensure optimal performance. This study aims to examine the maintenance and repair methods of pistons in ship main engines to reduce the risk of damage and improve operational efficiency. This study analyzes various types of common piston damage, such as piston ring wear, overheating, crown piston cracks, and deformation due to high pressure. Additionally, the study discusses maintenance procedures, including visual inspection, cleaning the piston from combustion carbon residues, and checking the lubrication system and the clearance between the piston and cylinder. The repair steps are also analyzed, including disassembly, inspection using measuring instruments, surface smoothing, piston ring replacement, and reinstallation with engine performance testing. The findings indicate that the implementation of systematic maintenance and repair procedures can extend the piston’s service life and improve the efficiency of the ship's main engine. By understanding the characteristics of damage and appropriate handling methods, ship technicians can prevent operational disruptions and optimize engine performance. Therefore, piston maintenance and repair must be carried out regularly according to established standards to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the ship.
