Abstract
Tugboat stability is a crucial factor that must be considered, given that its duties are often carried out in choppy waters and in uncertain weather conditions. This study aims to analyse the impact of ship bottom modifications and tank relocation on weight, gravity and stability, with the aim of providing design recommendations for improved stability and manoeuvrability. The modifications resulted in a significant reduction in vessel weight from 53,963 tonnes to 42,190 tonnes, accompanied by changes in vertical gravity point (VCG) under four operating conditions, indicating a redistribution of vessel mass. Static stability analysis showed an increase in metacentric height (GM) values under all conditions, from a range of 1.059-1.203 m before modification to 1.219-1.393 m after modification, which met the stability criteria according to BKI and IMO standards. Dynamic stability evaluation through rolling period calculation showed values between 2.67 to 2.86 seconds, in accordance with BKI Part 6 Vol C ship inclination testing guidelines, indicating adequate stability performance post- modification. In addition, the main dimensions of the vessel underwent changes, with the waterline length (LWL) increasing from 16.00 m to 16.35 m and other dimensions increasing from 15.00 m to 15.75 m, in accordance with BKI Volume II classification rules. The overall results show that bottom hull modification and tank repositioning effectively improve the transverse stability and mass distribution of the vessel without compromising safety and operational performance aspects. It is recommended to consider hull modification and tank repositioning to improve stability and manoeuvrability. In addition, operational adjustments based on the stability analysis results are recommended to improve the operational performance of the Tugboat.
