Abstract
This paper is aimed at Indonesia, a strategically located archipelagic nation, which holds a significant role in the maritime sector. One of the critical elements supporting the safety and efficiency of navigation is the Aids to Navigation (AtoN), particularly buoys. This research aims to analyze the role of buoys in the Tanjung Perak Surabaya shipping channel, including maintenance standards, benefits for navigation safety, and the impacts of the absence of buoys. The methods used include field observations, interviews, and literature studies. The findings of this paper reveal that buoys play a role in marking safe routes, helping ships avoid navigational hazards, and enhancing port operational efficiency. Buoy maintenance is conducted routinely every three months, involving cleaning, structural inspections, lighting maintenance, and corrosion protection. The absence of buoys can increase the risk of accidents, such as collisions and groundings, disrupt port operations, and reduce navigation safety, especially during adverse weather conditions. Based on the results of this paper, buoys are a crucial element in ensuring the safety and smooth operation of navigation in Tanjung Perak. It is recommended to improve buoy technology by installing an Automatic Identification System (AIS) to enable more effective monitoring and responsive adjustments to buoy positioning. This is expected to support safer and more efficient navigation in the future. Keywords: Buoy, navigation safety, Aids to Navigation (AtoN), navigation maintenance.
