Abstract

SMS (Safety Management System) is a floating safety management system and implements safety management procedures to ensure that conditions and activities on board the ship are carried out in accordance with applicable regulatory standards. To minimize work safety, especially for crews carrying out work on the MV. Venus is a General Cargo type ship with a DWT of more than 20,000. The aim of this research is to analyze the factors that result in hampered safety management and identify efforts made to improve the implementation of the Safety Management System in MV. VENUS. This research method is descriptive qualitative. Data sources are taken from primary and secondary data. Data collection techniques use field research which includes observation and documentation to obtain data validity techniques. The results of the research concluded that the factors that caused the work safety management system at MV were hampered. Venus is the lack of understanding and discipline of the ship's crew regarding the perpetrators of implementing the Safety Management System, inadequate work equipment, ship crew to improve work safety, and lack of supervision and role of the company. So efforts can be made to increase understanding and discipline by familiarizing new crew members and holding regular safety meetings so that the crew can understand the Safety Management System and understand the condition of the ship before starting work on the ship.
