Abstract

A sea chest is a device that is in contact with sea water and is placed on the inside of the ship's shell. The performance of the sea water system in the ship depends on the supply of sea water sucked in by the sea chest, so the sea water system can operate fully if the sea chest is able to suck in sea water according to its needs. The qualitative descriptive method is a data analysis method used by researchers. The definition of descriptive is a research method to describe existing or occurring phenomena. Meanwhile, qualitative is a data collection technique by means of observation, document review and interviews. The purpose of writing, according to the title of the writing, is "The Role Of Sea Chest In Ship Operations On Mv. Malacca Strait Semarang" The purpose of writing the paper to, find out the factors that cause sea chests to work not optimally, find out how to care for sea chests to optimize water needs sea on board. Factors that cause the Sea Chest not to work optimally are that the filter plate often has problems such as being clogged or blocked by dirt or rubbish being sucked in, abnormal pressure in the fresh water pump system, abnormal temperature in the cooling process which can affect the cooling or transfer process. heat applied, blockage of the Sea Water Flow holes in the Fresh Water Cooler and lack of regular maintenance on the fresh water cooler. Sea cheast have an important role in ship operations, namely meeting the needs of the ship's sea water system, as a gateway for the entry of sea water into the engine room, preventing the entry of large objects such as rubbish, fish and nets and filtering sea water to remove fish, grass. wild, plankton, and shellfish.
