Abstract
Indonesia has significant marine potential, including in the shipbuilding industry, which requires corrosion-resistant materials for hull applications. Aluminum is often chosen due to its resistance to corrosion, especially in the 5xxx series, such as aluminum 5083 and 5052. This study aims to compare the corrosion rates of aluminum 5083 and 5052 in seawater media, focusing on factors affecting corrosion and their implications for material selection for ship hulls. The objective of this study is to determine the corrosion rate using the weight loss method in accordance with ASTM G31-72 standards. The research uses an experimental design, submerging both types of aluminum in seawater for various time periods (168 to 720 hours). The results show that aluminum 5052 experienced a higher corrosion rate compared to aluminum 5083 at every immersion duration, with the highest corrosion rate recorded for aluminum 5052 after 720 hours of immersion (0.4489 mmpy), while aluminum 5083 was recorded at 0.3922 mmpy. Microstructural analysis revealed differences in the distribution of magnesium particles between the two materials, affecting corrosion resistance. The conclusion, aluminum 5083 is superior in corrosion resistance compared to aluminum 5052 and is more recommended for ship hull applications in corrosive marine environments.
