Abstract
On the ship's main engine there is a diesel engine that can move due to combustion in the cylinder and produces a high enough heat, if it is not cooled it will cause overheating of the engine and it can shorten the life and function of the engine. The air supplied by the turbocharger is affected by the exhaust gases hence high temperature with low density. Then the air must be cooled. The intercooler cools the rinse air from the turbocharger before it enters the combustion chamber. Cooled air will have a lower temperature with a higher oxygen content. The causes of the increase in the temperature of the hot air in the intercooler are Dirty Inlet Compressor, clogged intake manifold, half year maintenance, broken thermostat, dirty turbocharger air filter, exhaust gas leak, dirty intercooler body, dirty intercooler grille or fins. The occurrence of blockage in the intercooler fins or lattice results in non-optimal performance of the intercooler. Cleaning activities on the Inlet Compressor, Intake Manifold Cleaning, Half year maintenance, Thermostat replacement, turbocharger air filter cleaning, Exhaust gas replacement, cleaning dirty intercooler body, cleaning grille or dirty fins will result in temperature at back to normal manifold. After cleaning the grille or intercooler fins, the performance of the intercooler becomes optimal. The problem is that there is an increase in the temperature of the ship's main engine marked by an increase in the temperature of the hot air on the thermometer. Constraints also occur in the intercooler grille or fins which are very dirty and result in a lack of seawater supply entering the intercooler and causing the ship's engine performance to decrease. The result of this research is the cleaning of the intercooler components from the Inlet, Intake Manifold, Turbocharger, Grille and intercooler fins has an impact on the performance of the intercooler itself. If maintenance or maintenance is always carried out, it will reduce the risk of damage to the intercooler. If the channel on the intercooler is blocked, it will have an impact on overheating the main engine because the air circulation in the intercooler is not smooth.
