Abstract
Shipping is a component of sea transportation which is very important for the world of maritime communications, and has the potential to be a very useful tool for achieving the goals of national unity, realizing Indonesia's vision of becoming the world's maritime axis, and strengthening the country's economy. There are several potential accidents that can endanger the safety of crew members, cargo and ships in the world of shipping. One of the accidents that often occurs is ship fires. For this reason, ship crews need knowledge about how to extinguish fires, therefore there is a need for active checks carried out by Central Java Regional Police Directorate of Polairud to carry out periodically. The analytical method used in this research is qualitative analysis with the techniques used, namely interviews, field observations, and data collection through observation, interviews and library research. The results of this research show that there are several standards for extinguishing equipment, determining countermeasures for poor maintenance of fire extinguishers and determining strategic steps used by the Central Java Regional Police's Directorate of Air and Water for the maintenance of fire extinguishers. Therefore, so that extinguishers can be maintained in the condition they should be, an understanding of how to maintain fire extinguishers needs to be provided to all crew members on board the ship in order to know how to extinguish fires.
