Abstract
The main engine is an important part of the ship that greatly affects its performance. The combustion process of the main engine is very important to produce perfect combustion to obtain optimal power, and the use of this air often hinders the operation of the main engine, causing the main engine to not work properly and disrupting the transportation process. The intercooler functions as an auxiliary tool to cool the air produced by the turbocharger so that the density of compressed air increases and the weight density of the air increases, reducing the exhaust temperature and heat load of the main engine. Proper intercooler maintenance is critical to the performance and efficiency of the main engine because dirt, oil, and debris can impede airflow and reduce engine performance. This paper aims to optimize maintenance on the intercooler in order to improve the combustion process in the main engine. The method used by the author is a qualitative method because the author makes direct observations on the spot including interviews, observations, document studies and literature studies. Various problems with the intercooler are usually caused by the buildup of scale / dirt in the intercooler inlet hole. Maintenance is often done by cleaning the intercooler grille with chemicals or pressurized water on a scheduled basis. The intercooler connection pipes and intercooler bolts must also be checked so that no leaks occur. Intercooler is a tool that plays a very important role in the combustion process in the main engine, therefore it requires regular maintenance so that the combustion process in the main engine is optimal and does not interfere with transportation activities.
