Abstract
There have been records of ship accidents in Indonesian waters. There are many problems that caused the accidents, such as collision between ships, collision between ships and ports, grounding and many more. Most accidents caused by human eror. So, the government of the Republic of Indonesia built a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) to make sure the security and safety of ship, cargo, and crews. It is also intended to avoid danger that threatened navigation and shipping. The purpose of the study is to know the function and rules of Vessel Traffic Service as navigational aid to increase safety voyage at Semarang, Central Java. The data Collecting method used were observation, interviews to increase the vigilance of navigating on a voyage to avoid accidents and literature methods. The results of this study can be concluded that the construction of the Traffic Serice Vessel has improved the safety of every ship that sails both in the free channel and the port channel, and avoid trapping bad weather, so that the risk of accidents at sea can be minimized.
