Abstract

Radar will be very useful during bad weather, foggy conditions and sailing at night, especially when navigation signs such as beacons, buoys, hills or buildings can not be visually observed. So ship officers must understand and understand to use radar navigation tools optimally, because these shipping lanes are prone to collision and aground hazards. So the ship's officers must be observant when passing through shipping lanes when using the radar on the ship. A method must be applied in accordance with existing procedures. This can be done well if the ship's officers as executing operators have the knowledge to operate the radar optimally. Radar is used to determine the position of the ship, detect any dangers around the ship and minimize the occurrence of accidents when passing through busy shipping lanes. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of radar navigation tools when passing through shipping lanes, to find out what obstacles occur to radars when passing through shipping lanes, and to determine radar operations when in a narrow shipping lane. In writing this paper, the author describes the radar optimization method as a basis for solving existing problems. The method used in this research is descriptive (when viewed in terms of the level of presentation) and also qualitative (when viewed from the way of processing data). In this case the data collection technique is in the form of an approach to the object through observation, direct interviews with respondents and using documents and data related to radar optimization. From the results of the research conducted, it was found that there were problems in radar optimization. Radar operating procedures are less than optimal due to incomplete manual book instructions, lack of maintenance of radar navigation tools, the influence of the surrounding environment can result in a decrease in radar performance, lack of crew knowledge of radar navigation tools. The author's suggestion is that as an officer in charge of navigation equipment, he must understand how to operate the radar optimally when passing through the shipping lane.
