Abstract
Ships are a very efficient means of transportation. Following the development of the era that is now more advanced and modern and sophisticated, ships are also designed so that they can meet the desired needs. To support the operation of the ship, skilled crew is also needed and ready to work on board. The smooth performance of the main engine can not be separated from the role of the cooling water factor. In the parent engine cooling water system depends also on two factors, namely the factor of cooling water quality and the factor of the material itself. Therefore, the quality and cleanliness of cooling water need to be maintained so as to ensure the smooth performance of the main engine, because the main engine performance is often disrupted due to poor and poorly maintained cooling water, which will cause corrosion in the material and cause crust which prevents heat transfer . The method used is the SHEL and USG method. The method for identifying problems arising from a system and optimizing them and for arranging the order of priorities for issues that must be resolved. The formulation of the problem from this study is that the guard engineer must implement the cooling water to support the performance of the main engine, the cause of poor cooling water quality in supporting the performance of the main engine, efforts that can be made in the maintenance of cooling systems to support the performance of the main engine. From the results of this study, it was concluded that the clogging of the cooling water pipelines by scale was sufficiently thick to make an indication of the lack of maintenance of the main engine cooling system. The impact that is caused is the decrease in the performance of the main engine. The effort that can be done is to always check or check the temperature and water quality to ensure the cooling performance remains normal so that it can support the durability of the main engine when operating. And control of corrosion or corrosion processes to prevent leakage or blockage. Keywords: Cooling water, main engine, SHEL, USG.
