Abstract
In several industrial-related disasters occurring at this time, gas leakage is one of the causes of the most severe losses because of its nature which is dangerous for human safety. And the safety of people at sea does not only depend on the crew of the ship, or its equipment. But also from these equipment to be used at any time. Working surrounded by gases laced with hazardous substances poses a high risk to human health and safety. And also if we find the dangerous gas in a closed space area. Therefore, attention must be paid to procedures, tool use, crew understanding, and maintenance of gas detectors. The purpose of this paper is to increase the knowledge and understanding of ship crews about the importance of using a gas detector on board a ship. And each ship's crew can know their duties and responsibilities in an effort to prevent work accidents on board. As long as the authors carry out ground practice and observations at MT. Navigator Global, the author found 3 problems, namely: the use of a gas detector in a closed space so that it is effective and the use of a gas detector as a measure of gas concentration in the air, a lack of knowledge of ship crews on the use of gas detectors and what role the Chief Officer plays in gas detector maintenance. . Based on the description above, the writer tries to observe more deeply so that the paper entitled "Intensive Use of Gas Detector as Detection of Toxic Gases in Confined Space and To Measure Concentration of Gas Levels in Air at MT." Global Navigator ”. With the method of collecting data both by observation, interview, and library research that the author collected, an accurate discussion can be taken. The Chief Officer has a very important role in solving this problem, from starting to provide understanding, how to use, and routine exercises or drills for all ship crews. The author hopes that the reader can further understand the function and implementation of a gas detector in a closed room against the dangers of toxic gases, especially in the tank, in order to reduce the risk that can cause accidents.
