Abstract

Ships are very important of transportation in the world they are for commerce and as a means of passenger transportation. The safety of sailing is a factor that must be taken seriously. In maintaining the safety of ships when sailing international maritime organizations (IMO) makes regulations. Then a classification body was formed which aimed to describe the ship and also to ensure that the components on board were seaworthy. Survey is an activity carried out by biro klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI) to maintain the suitability of ships to sail. It is by checking each part of the ship in accordance with the regulations. The purpose of this study is to find out the main tasks and functions of classification and survey as a reference for the feasibility of a ship to sail according to SOLAS 1974 by BKI Semarang branch. Data collection method used were observation, interviews, literature studies and documents. The method of solving problems with interviews yields some information. For example, if a ship is corroded then the ship must be repaired immediately and if the corrosion of the ship is more than 20% of the original plate then the plate must be replaced with a new oneThe results this study is that in supporting the safety of BKI sailing vessels, it plays an important role in maintaining ship's seaworthiness. It is by conducting inspection and survey activities in accordance with applicable international rules. Keywords: Survey, Ship Safety
