Abstract

The air pressure is one of the supporting operations for diesel engines which as diesel engines is the main engines of ship, and air is the first step to start operating the engine, on the ship we know it as a starting air system. The starting air system on board is produced by an auxiliary engine who called a compressor which uses electricity from the generator. The air which produced by compressor forwaded to bottle of air (air reservoir). In the bottle the air pressurized 25 kg until 30 kg or 25 bar until 30 bar. According from SOLAS, that for the engine directly driven without gear box must be able start 12 times without refilling again, while for engines with gear box can be able start 6 times. The air from the air vessel is at least 17 kg / 17 bar cause if the air pressure below than it, then that air can’t press to down the piston. When the air valve pressure in the air vessel is fully opened, then the air will exit to main starting valve. After that air is reduced pressure until ±10 bar. If the handle start press to down, then the air exit from the system a partially entered first to valve distributor, and partly again to the cylinder head air starting valve. The start air is regulated by valve distributor with 10 bar pressure. Which works on the expansi process (only 1 cylinder works). The one of component which found on starting air system, which affects engine can’t rotate when starting air is supplied is the lack of air pressure from the air vessel which the air under 17 kg / (17 bar). So the air which supplied from air bottle can’t press the piston to down. The lack of the air in the bottle often occurs because damage one of component from compressor, so compressor working can’t maximum and makes the air filling on the air bottle slow down.
