Abstract

Ballast water is very important for safe ship operation. This provides maneuver stability and capability during travel and during loading and unloading operations. Ballast water management also reduces gastric pressure caused by adverse sea conditions. The process of loading and unloading ballast water does not pose a major threat to environmental, health and economic vectors for the movement of organisms between ecosystems from one part of the world to another. When ballast water is taken from the port many microscopic organisms and sediments are inserted into the ship's ballast tank. Many of these organisms are able to survive in tanks. And when ballast water is released, they are released into a new environment. If the appropriate conditions exist in this release environment, this species will survive and reproduce and become an invasive species. In some cases there is a high probability that this organism will become the dominant species. And potentially resulting in: extinction of native species, effects on local / regional biodiversity, effects on coastal industries that use water extraction, effects on public health and impacts on local economies based on fisheries. On international shipping when the ship sails from Indonesia to the United States, it is required to conduct an Exchange Ballast. The Ballast Exchange is a process that involves replacing water in a ship's ballast tank recommended by IMO. Aim to reduce the harmful effects on the environment that is spread through aquatic micro organisms that are transferred from one area to another through ship operations. However, during the Exchange Ballast process there is a risk of a broken body on the ship if done in bad weather. Therefore IMO recommends a ship machining called the Ballast Water Treatment System. Which is a tool that can kill micro organisms that pass Ultra Violet. With the existence of the auxiliary machinery, the Ballast exchange does not need to be done again so as to reduce the risk of broken parts of the ship. Keywords:Ballast Water Treatment System, Ultra Violet, Ballast Exchange, Micro Organisms.
