Abstract

The main bearing plays a vital role in maintaining the stability of the crankshaft in a diesel generator. This component is generally made of metal alloy materials that have high resistance to friction, pressure, and the operating temperatures of the engine. The main bearing functions as a support for the crankshaft and serves to reduce friction between moving components, such as the crankshaft and bearing housing, which operate under dynamic loads. Wear on the main bearing can lead to increased friction, excessive operating temperatures, and abnormal vibrations, potentially resulting in more severe damage to other engine components. These conditions may cause operational disruptions, including generator shutdowns and financial losses due to extended repair downtime. The writing method used by the author in presenting the problem is a descriptive and qualitative method, intended to describe and elaborate on the observed object. .This study aims to examine appropriate and effective maintenance methods to prevent wear on the main bearing of a ship’s auxiliary generator engine. The maintenance approaches discussed include selecting bearing materials that are suitable for operating conditions, applying optimal lubrication techniques to minimize friction, and conducting routine inspections and maintenance to detect early signs of wear. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the importance of replacing main bearings that have reached their allowable wear limits in order to prevent more serious engine damage. Through proper maintenance practices, the service life of the main bearing can be extended, engine efficiency can be improved, and maintenance costs as well as operational downtime can be reduced, thereby enhancing the overall reliability of the ship’s generator system.
