Abstract
As a maritime country with wide territorial waters, Indonesia has a high level of vogaye activity, resulting in a significant potential for maritime accidents. In these situations, speed and accuracy in conducting search and rescue (SAR) operations are crucial for minimizing loss of life. One of the primary tools used to support SAR operations at sea is Sound Navigation and Ranging (SONAR), an underwater detection system that utilizes sound waves to locate objects at sea, including drowning victims. This study aims to analyze the role, effectiveness, and constraints in the use of the SONAR system on the KN. Sadewa 231 Semarang, as well as to identify optimization efforts so that the tool can function more optimally in search operations for people drown. The method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques through field observations, interviews with ship operators, and literature studies related to SONAR technology and marine SAR operations. The results of the discussion indicate that SONAR has an important role in detecting the presence of objects under the sea surface quickly and accurately. However, its effectiveness is still affected by several factors, such as water conditions, operator skills, and suboptimal equipment maintenance. Keywords: SONAR, optimization, SAR operations, drowning victims, KN. Sadewa 231 Semarang
