Abstract
The auxiliary generator engine is one of the vital components on board a ship, functioning as a source of electrical power to support ship operations, including navigation systems, communication equipment, and the domestic needs of the crew. One of the important components of the auxiliary generator engine is the piston ring, which functions to maintain the tightness of the combustion chamber, control oil consumption, and assist heat transfer from the piston to the cylinder wall. Over time, piston rings may experience wear or damage, which can lead to decreased engine performance, increased fuel and lubricating oil consumption, and reduced combustion efficiency. This paper aims to explain the procedure for replacing piston rings in an auxiliary generator engine, starting from the causes of piston ring damage, the stages of disassembly, component inspection, installation of new piston rings, to reassembly and engine testing. The methods used in this study include direct observation, interviews with technicians or engine operators, and literature studies from books and engine manuals. It is expected that by carrying out the piston ring replacement procedure correctly and in accordance with standards, the performance of the auxiliary generator engine can be restored to optimal condition, the service life of the engine can be extended, and the potential for further damage can be minimized.
