Abstract
Cooling media is one of the factors that affect the surface roughness of the workpiece in the machining process, especially in the turning process. In this study aims to determine the effect of variations in cooling media on the surface roughness of the workpiece resulting from flat turning on ST.40 steel. This study uses an experimental method with the dependent variable being surface roughness and the independent variable being the cooling media. The cooling media used in this study include: water, dromus oil and radiator coolant. The research subjects or research samples were 6 specimens, for air cooling media as many as 2 specimens, oil cooling media as many as 2 specimens and coolant cooling media as many as 2 specimens. Furthermore, the data analysis technique used one-way ANOVA by analyzing the surface roughness data of each specimen after testing the surface roughness twice for 1 specimen using an infrared thermometer. Based on the data analysis, coolant cooling produced the lowest surface roughness, with a surface roughness of 0.62 μm, compared to air cooling, which produced a surface roughness of 1,23 μm, and oil cooling, which produced a surface roughness of 0.85 μm.
