Abstract

Ballast pump is a tool to function to position the ship in a state of balance both in the front trim and rear trim, as well as the state of shaking, so that the position of the ship can return in a perfect position. Based on the working principle the ballast pump is also called the kinetic pump, because at the rotation the impeller produces is the force of the kinetic velocity then converted to a compressive force. The ballast pump has an impeller to lift the liquid from a low place to a higher place. Outside power is given to the pump shaft to rotate the impeller on the liquid, the liquid is driven by the impeller blades. Ballast pumps include non priming pumps because they can not suck themselves, must be by "fished" or dived first. ("Machinery Assistance Level Operational Field of Teknika" BP3IP compilation team, Edition I, 2005). In order to maintain the performance capacity of the ballast pump, proper maintenance and checking are made to ensure proper operation. These treatments include: Suction of pump strainer suction, and inspection of pump line. Checking error of operation of ballast pump caused valve sea chest not opened. Inspection of damage found between the noise of the pump due to impeller damage, ballast pump suction power is less caused by leakage of packing, motor over heat element due to bent shaft or not center on ballast pump with precise to the possibility of damage, ballast pump less suction power due to damaged seal, bending on Shaft resulted in the motor element over heat. The results of the study, among others: The treatment is expected to maintain the working capacity of the ballast pump remains the maximum performance and extend the usage period. The operation of the ballast pump is worth noting expected. Impaired handling is expected to maximize the return of ballast pump performance. The benefits of the above activities for related companies are expected to minimize the risk of loss in terms of management of related shipping companies. Keywords: Ballast Pump
