Abstract

In an effort to realize a developed and independent region and a just society and prosperous, the province of central Java was faced with various challenges and at the same time the opportunity to enter the 3rd millennium of globalization Meanwhile, the most fundamental challenge is how to get out of the economic crisis that hit the Indonesian nation since 1997 and pr€pare the province of Central Java to cofnpete in the global competition so that we will not be lefl behind, In orderto respond to the challenges and utilization ofthose opportunities, it is necessary to improve economic efficiency, technological developmen! labor productivity in increasing the sigrificant contribution of each development sector. Maritime areas defined as fisheries sector, maritime tourism, maritime mining, maritime indusffy, maritime transportation, maritime buildings, and maritime services, are a mainstay in responding to these challenges and opportunities. This study was conducted for two reasons: l. maritime and fishery is still one of the leading sectors that helped thg economy of Indonesian society. The lack of rnaximum utilization of maritime and fishery sector has become a spotlight for local govemments in developing the sector to become a leading sector 2. aims to identifu the economic potential of coastal communities, to elaborate the human resources potential of coastal communities, to investigate the role of coastal community economic institutions, and to understand the socio-economic conditions and support of infrastructure in the context of economic development. This research was carried out in maritime and fishery department of Central Java province and coastal community that exist in Pati, Batang, Kendal and Tegal. By using descriptive analysis The results of this study indicate the economic potential of communities in coastal areas is prospective, but the socio-economic conditions of communities in coastal areas is very slow, in addition to the role and support of infrastructure to develop coastal communities
