Abstract

A generator is an auxiliary engine that functions as the primary source of electrical power to support various operational systems on board a ship. The reliability of the generator is highly dependent on the maintenance system implemented. If maintenance is not carried out systematically, the risk of equipment failure may increase and disrupt the ship's operational activities. Therefore, the implementation of preventive maintenance based on the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) plays an essential role in maintaining the generator's performance and operational reliability. The purpose of this paper is to determine the actual condition of the generator maintenance system, analyze the implementation of preventive maintenance in preventing operational disruptions, and identify the factors that hinder the maintenance process. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through direct observation, interviews with engine room personnel, documentation, and literature review. The collected data were analyzed descriptively by comparing the actual conditions in the field with the applicable maintenance theories and procedures to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive maintenance on the generator. The results indicate that the generator maintenance system has been implemented based on running hours, the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), and the manufacturer's maintenance manual through daily inspections, lubricating oil replacement, filter replacement, cooling system inspection, and fuel system inspection. These maintenance activities have contributed to maintaining the generator's reliability and minimizing operational disruptions. However, several obstacles remain, including limited spare parts availability, high operational intensity, and the effects of the marine environment on engine components. In conclusion, well-planned and consistently implemented preventive maintenance significantly improves generator reliability and supports the smooth operation of the vessel. Keywords: generator, preventive maintenance, Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
