Abstract
The reliability of a ship’s main engine highly depends on a properly functioning cooling system. One of the important components of this system is the cooling pump. If the pump experiences problems, such as decreased pressure caused by an excessively worn impeller, leakage in the mechanical seal, or blockages due to dirt and marine organisms, the engine cooling process can be disrupted. As a result, the engine temperature may increase and lead to overheating. If this condition is allowed to persist, more serious damage may occur, such as piston seizure or cracking of the cylinder head. Damage to the cooling system while the vessel is underway can pose a serious risk to the safety of the crew and cargo. In addition, such problems can cause significant financial losses because the vessel may experience delays and require costly repairs. Therefore, proper and routine maintenance of the cooling pump is essential to maintain the performance of the main engine. This research aims to determine the appropriate cooling pump maintenance procedures in accordance with the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) standards, identify the factors that can cause a decrease in pump performance, and examine the effect of maintenance activities on the performance of the main engine of TB. Bina Benua 23. By carrying out proper and scheduled maintenance, it is expected that the main engine temperature can remain stable and the vessel’s operational activities can run smoothly.
