Abstract
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding method capable of producing high-quality joints without melting the metal. This study aims to analyze the integrity of FSW joints in AA5052 aluminum with material thickness variations of 4 mm and 8 mm through Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), impact testing based on ASTM E23, and bending testing based on ASTM E290. The PT results showed that the 8 mm-thick joint had better surface quality than the 4 mm-thick joint. In the impact test, the 8 mm thickness produced an average impact energy of 8.41 J, which was higher than the 4 mm thickness at 6.66 J, while the average impact value for the 4 mm thickness was 0.16 J/mm², higher than the 8 mm thickness at 0.09 J/mm². The bending test results showed that the 8 mm thickness had an average Force value of 701.881 N, higher than the 4 mm thickness at 178.270 N. However, the 4 mm thickness had higher Tensile Strength and Elongation values of 82.898 MPa and 4.426%, respectively, compared to the 8 mm thickness, which had values of 65.765 MPa and 1.585%. Based on these results, material thickness variations affect the integrity of FSW joints. The 8 mm thickness performed better in terms of maximum load resistance and total impact energy absorption, while the 4 mm thickness showed higher impact value, Tensile Strength, and Elongation.
