Abstract

Seawater cooling centrifugal pumps play a vital role in maintaining the performance of a ship's main engine. Pump shafts frequently suffer damage due to torsional loads and the corrosive seawater environment. Shaft damage on the KN. Prajapati significantly impaired the performance of both the pump and the main engine cooling system. This paper aims to identify the causes of shaft failure in seawater cooling centrifugal pumps and to explain appropriate, effective shaft repair and maintenance procedures. Additionally, it examines the impact of shaft damage on the main engine cooling system's performance. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, utilizing direct observation and interviews. Primary data were gathered through direct inspection of the shaft's condition and interviews with the ship's engine crew, while secondary data were obtained from literature reviews, scientific journals, and technical maintenance documents. The findings indicate that the shaft failure was caused by fatigue fracture resulting from pitting corrosion; the pitting corrosion initiated cracks that propagated until the pump shaft suffered a complete break. Repairs involved dismantling the pump, installing a new shaft, and conducting comprehensive operational testing. Post repair results showed normal pump vibration, stable seawater pressure, and optimal cooling temperatures. The implementation of preventive maintenance and a Planned Maintenance System proved effective in preventing recurring shaft failures. A comparison table demonstrates significant improvements across all pump operational parameters following the repairs. Mechanical seal leakage was also successfully resolved, eliminating seawater seepage. This paper is intended to serve as a preventive maintenance guide for maritime practitioners and shipping agencies, as well as an academic reference for the advancement of marine engineering knowledge. Proper shaft repair and maintenance can significantly restore pump performance, thereby enhancing the reliability of the main engine cooling system and ensuring safer vessel operations.
