Abstract

The cooling system is a vital system on a ship's main engine that functions to maintain the operating temperature of engine components within safe operational limits. A key component within this closed cooling system is the freshwater cooling pump, which circulates pressurized fresh water to absorb the heat generated by the combustion process. This research was motivated by an operational issue on TB. BINA BENUA 8, where the freshwater cooling pump malfunctioned, leading to overheating of the main engine. The objectives of this study are to analyze the impact of inadequate pump maintenance on main engine performance, identify the necessary maintenance efforts to ensure optimal pump operation, and examine the factors contributing to the suboptimal performance of the impeller. The research methodology employed is descriptive qualitative. Data collection was conducted during field and shore-based internship periods from August 1 to November 30, 2025, at PT. Bahtera Setia Raya Semarang and aboard TB. Bina Benua 8. Data were gathered through structured interviews with the second engineer, oilers, and field staff, as well as through direct observation, literature review, and documentation. The results indicate that negligence in pump maintenance leads to suboptimal cooling medium circulation, triggering overheating, automatic engine deceleration (slow down), component thermal expansion, and increased exhaust gas temperatures. To ensure the pump operates perfectly, strict adherence to a Planned Maintenance System (PMS) is required, encompassing weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance, along with periodic condition monitoring. Furthermore, the decline in impeller performance is influenced by several factors, including cavitation, abrasion/erosion, corrosion, mineral scale accumulation, mechanical damage, and operating beyond design limits. Keywords: Cooling Pump, Main Engine, Impeller, Preventive Maintenance, Overheat.
