Abstract

The seawater cooling system is a supporting system that functions to maintain the engine operating temperature within its normal range during ship operations. One of the most common problems is blockage in the sea chest and cooling passages caused by marine debris, marine organism growth, sediment deposits, corrosion, and inadequate maintenance. These conditions obstruct the flow of seawater, reducing the effectiveness of the cooling process. This scientific paper aims to identify the factors causing blockages in the seawater cooling system, analyze the impact of reduced seawater flow on the cooling system performance, and describe maintenance efforts to ensure the system operates optimally. The method used in this study is a literature review, based on books, scientific journals, and other references related to seawater cooling systems on board ships. The results show that blockages reduce seawater flow, resulting in less effective heat transfer in the cooler and increasing the risk of overheating. Routine maintenance, including cleaning the sea chest, sea strainer, and cooler, as well as inspecting valves and pumps, can maintain smooth seawater flow and improve the performance of the cooling system. Keywords: seawater cooling system, sea chest, blockage, preventive maintenance.
