Abstract
Ships are essential means of sea transportation that play a crucial role in supporting various human activities such as trade, tourism, and public mobility. During their operational period, ships experience performance degradation in both structural and mechanical systems due to factors such as aging, environmental conditions, and operational errors. One of the vital components that significantly affects the performance of a ship’s engine is the radiator in the generator’s cooling system. The radiator functions to maintain optimal engine operating temperature and prevent overheating through the circulation of the water-cooling system. The use of standard-compliant coolant fluids and the application of coating technology can prevent corrosion and extend the service life of the engine. This study aims to identify the factors causing radiator damage and determine appropriate maintenance methods for the generator cooling system onboard KM. Kendhaga Nusantara V. The research employed a qualitative approach through direct observation and interviews with technicians during the shore practice (Prada) at PT. Citra Bahari Shipyard Tegal. The collected data were analyzed descriptively to illustrate the condition of the cooling system and the maintenance procedures applied in the field. The results show that radiator damage is generally caused by corrosion, leakage in the radiator core, damaged seals, loose hoses, and the use of non-standard cooling water. In addition, engine vibration and lack of routine maintenance accelerate the deterioration of radiator performance. Regular maintenance through visual inspections, cooling system pressure testing, and the use of manufacturer-recommended coolant has proven to improve cooling efficiency and extend the radiator’s lifespan. By implementing proper maintenance procedures, the risk of overheating can be minimized, and the reliability of the ship’s electrical system can be effectively maintained.
