Abstract
Welding is one of the most widely used metal joining methods in construction and manufacturing. One of the efficient welding techniques is Flux Cored Arc Welding Self-Shielded (FCAW-SS), which can be applied to various metals without the need for external shielding gas. Galvanized hollow steel is commonly used in lightweight construction due to its corrosion resistance; however, the zinc coating poses challenges during welding as it can produce toxic fumes and affect weld quality. Therefore, it is necessary to study the effect of welding current variations on the mechanical properties of welded joints. This research aims to analyze the effect of FCAW-SS welding current variations on tensile strength, bending strength, and hardness of galvanized hollow steel. The welding currents used were 65 A, 70 A, and 85 A. The testing methods included tensile testing using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), bending testing with the three-point bending method according to ASTM E290, and hardness testing using the Rockwell method (HRC) with a 150 kgf load. Several specimens were tested for each current variation to obtain accurate and reliable data. The results show that welding current variations significantly affect the mechanical properties of welded joints. In the tensile test, the highest average Max. Stress was obtained at 85 A with 341.870 MPa, while the lowest was at 65 A with 163.517 MPa. In the bending test, the highest average Max. Load was found at 85 A with 34.465 kgf, compared to 22.821 kgf at 65 A. Rockwell hardness testing showed the highest value at 85 A with 18 HRC, followed by 65 A with 17.16 HRC, and the lowest at 70 A with 15.33 HRC. It can be concluded that increasing the welding current tends to improve tensile strength, bending strength, and hardness, although excessively high currents may cause variations in weld quality between specimens. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for selecting welding parameters of galvanized hollow steel using FCAW-SS, both in industrial applications and technical education.
