Abstract
As a mobile facility, a ship requires reliable support systems to ensure the comfort and safety of its crew, one of which is the central air conditioning (AC) system in the accommodation spaces. Suboptimal central AC performance can diminish comfort, impact health, and reduce crew work efficiency. This scientific paper aims to identify the central AC maintenance procedures applied on the KN Edam ship, recognize the challenges encountered in their implementation, and understand optimal maintenance strategies to enhance accommodation comfort. The method employed is qualitative research through direct observation, interviews with engineering officers, documentation, and literature review during onshore practical training on the KN Edam ship. The research findings reveal that central AC maintenance is conducted in stages via daily, weekly, and monthly routines aligned with the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) and manufacturer manuals; however, implementation remains suboptimal due to limitations in human resources, spare parts procurement, installation access, and maintenance documentation. In conclusion, optimizing central AC maintenance through the development of specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), operation-hourbased preventive maintenance, and improved recording systems can enhance system reliability and sustainably maintain crew thermal comfort. Keywords: central air conditioning, maintenance, comfort, ship, accommodation spaces.
